What is the Essential Question that drives my work?
This body of work involves an investigation centered around my favorite book, "I'll Give You the Sun", by Jandy Nelson. I heavily related to the book, and was greatly inspired when I first read it. My question is, how can I demonstrate the impact art has on youth, as shown through modern literature?
Book Synopsis
"At first, Jude and her twin brother Noah, are inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them.
Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways... but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor. The early years are Noah's to tell; the later years are Jude's. But they each have only half the story, and if they can only find their way back to one another, they'll have a chance to remake their world. " (Goodreads)

There are many instances in this investigation that showcase my strengths, which is oil and acrylic paint. I start every piece by drawing thumbnails, and then enhancing the sketch. I then create color swatches to find which colors will effectively complete my piece. I also exhibit experimentation throughout my portfolio. In Investigation #3 (Blowing off Steam), I experimented with expression of line. I used a slanted brush to create curved lines on the teapots as well as the figures. I also experimented in #4 (Broken Umbrella #88), by using oil pastels for the first time. Going into my final works, I want to practice laying down shadows and dark values first, rather than starting right with the final version of the piece. #3 (Blowing off Steam) could be revised by adding more shading to the figures and their clothes. #8 (Tears of Mourning) needs another coat of paint in the background. #10 (Reversing Destiny) could use more highlights.
